Adobe Horno Oven Making
For the past twenty years, Cornerstones has assisted over 300 rural Hispanic and Native American communities throughout New Mexico, Colorado, Arizona, and Texas in the restoration of their historic and cultural structures as a way of preserving the rich cultural heritage unique to this region. Over 50 major restoration projects, led by the communities, have been successfully completed.
You will be building an adobe horno–traditional oven–for the Santa Fe Children's Museum. Working with technical experts from Cornerstones, you will experience the magic of turning earth, sand, water, and straw into architecture.
This workshop includes a brief discussion, led by their Executive Director James Hare, of Cornerstone’s current effort to restore the San Miguel Chapel. Questions regarding historic preservation, from community involvement to building techniques will be addressed.
