Weaving and fiber arts
Native Americans were the first fiber artists in Northern New Mexico, followed by the Spanish who introduced wool and looms to the area. Both cultures carry on a rich tradition of fiber arts to this day with examples seen throughout the area. The Española Fiber Arts Center is active in preserving and promoting this rich textile heritage through their classes on traditional techniques, and through lectures, tours, demonstrations, and the center’s supply shop.
The center will conduct a docent-led discussion of the area, highlighting the villages and areas that remain at the center of the fiber arts tradition in Northern New Mexico. Rio Grande weaving techniques will be taught along with Spanish Colonial Colcha embroidery to bring these historic art forms to life.
