Living History Museum

Once a paraje or stopping place along El Camino Real–the Royal Road–El Rancho de las Golondrinas is now a living museum of Spanish Colonial life and a perfect introduction to the southwestern frontier of the early 18th century. Set in a rural farming valley west of Santa Fe, the ranch's 200 acres are home to more than 30 historic buildings, mill ponds, flocks of sheep and goats, traditional horno ovens, and a band of historically dressed "villagers".

Demonstrations and docent led tours will take you through some of the daily activities at the ranch such as making textiles, creating beadwork, tinsmithing, blacksmithing, and woodcarving with many opportunities for hands-on experiences. After dinner there will be a demonstration of traditional Northern New Mexican dances.

The "Ranch of the Swallows" brings to life the caravans of soldiers, traders, and travelers of the past who found warmth, welcome, and rest at one of the most important, and now historic, ranches of the southwest.
