PAINTING WITH GLASS with Ted Sawyer – Bullseye Resource Center, Santa Fe,New Mexico

Tuesday, September 7th, 2010

PAINTING WITH GLASS
Ted Sawyer

September 23-26 (CLS106-0002)
Thursday 10am-6pm/Friday & Saturday 10am-4pm/Sunday 10am-Noon
8 students
$450

While there is a tradition of painting on glass that spans many centuries, it is only fairly recently that materials and processes have been developed, largely at Bullseye Glass, that allow artists to paint with glass. Students in this class will work with colored glass materials ranging from sheet to crushed glass powders and frits, and threads of glass called stringers to build a palette of techniques that allows a wide range of painterly effects. After working through a series of very specific hands-on exercises, students will undertake several exploratory projects to further develop their understanding of the materials. This workshop is suitable for artists from other media who want to translate their work into glass and is also valuable to beginning through advanced kilnworkers.

Waste / Not Exhibit – Art exhibit to feature recycled trash – Santa Fe Community Gallery

Sunday, September 5th, 2010

The Community Gallery will present an exhibition featuring artistic work that incorporates a minimum of 50% recycled materials whose final destination would have otherwise been a landfill. This exciting exhibit was curated to bring a critical light to the myriad of issues related to recycling, while presenting inspiring works for the public to consider not only for their material composition, but also their wonder and beauty. Over 20 artists were selected to participate in this exhibit for both their aesthetic excellence as well as their commitment to the exhibit theme.

Numerous community events will inform and educate visitors on the importance and alternatives of recycling as well as workshops with artists who utilize recycled materials in their work. The public is invited to an opening on Friday, September 24th from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. Free appetizers and sparkling water will be served. The Community Gallery is located inside the Santa Fe Community Convention Center, 201 West Marcy Street, at the intersection of Sheridan Street. Public parking is available in the Center garage, located off Federal Avenue. The Community Gallery is open Tuesday through Saturday, 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM.

“The Community Gallery continues to present innovative exhibition themes that simultaneously educate and excite visitors to the Gallery,” states gallery manager Rod Lambert. “Partnering with community organizations to expand the breadth and depth of our exhibits ensures that our programming addresses topical issues like the importance of recycling. Simultaneously, it allows artists to explore their media in new and interesting ways.”

The work of over 20 artists will be represented in the “Waste/Not” exhibit, with a variety of media in both 2-and-3 D and a full range of price points. The exhibit will include work by: Michael Freed, Goldie Garcia, Geoffrey Gorman, Marion Martinez, Darlene Olivia McElroy, Joe “Buffalo” Nickels, Sallyann Paschall, Patricia Pearce, Bunny Tobias, Felicia Trujillo and Dee Ann Wagner and other fine New Mexico artists.

The Community Gallery promotes, sells and exhibits the work of New Mexico artists and artisans, with the emphasis on Santa Fe, through exhibitions, professional training and community involvement in the arts. Community Gallery programming provides a range of services, exhibitions and activities that engage the public as well as support the efforts of local artists and artisans. As a result, the gallery is a hub for viewing and exhibiting exciting artworks and brings the community to art as well as art to the community. For more information about the Community Gallery, visit www.SantaFeArtsCommission.org, send an email to rdlambert@santafenm.gov or call 505-955-6705.
