Watch, dance, give palmas, and shout jaleo, amid Teresa’s stunning black and white photos of rural New Mexico. Housed in the historic Irene Von Horvath house (728 Canyon Road – behind Geronimo’s Restaurant), the Neptune Gallery building dates back to 1839. It is impeccably preserved and is on the Historic Registry. While you’re there explore the sprawling garden and open air lounge with a fresh juice made on site!
Our first event was a rocking success with lots of laughter and good times. Julia Chacon, her students, “Chispas Flamencas,” guitarist Yves Lucero, and friends mingled with attendants and shared the Spanish dance experience with locals and tourists alike. There was great audience participation and we encourage more of it the second time around. Join us to dance sevillanas in a casual environment with your fellow flamenco aficionados. If we’re lucky perhaps Seville native Marisa Perez might grace us with a song or two!

Make your visit fun and meaningful by getting to know the city’s art, culture, history, heritage and people. Workshops, classes and experiences taught by local community members in vibrant artists’ studios and other settings make a Santa Fe visit all the more memorable. Work with an artisan to learn glass blowing, ceramics or another craft; learn some flamenco dance moves with a Santa Fe performer; take a walk in the beautiful Santa Fe landscape and learn about the Native American and Spanish history of the area. With over 90 experiences to choose from, there is something for everyone.

If you haven’t seen a Juan Siddi Flamenco Theatre Company performance, I highly recommend you do so. It is not only the best flamenco dancing I’ve ever seen, but it’s simply the best dance performance I’ve ever seen, and I’ve seen Baryshnikov, Nureyev, most of the major American ballet and modern dance companies, numerous ethnic dance companies, etc. The dancing, choreography, direction, costumes, lighting, production, dance/music integration are just stunning. His theatrical approaches, new approaches to flamenco dance and his incredible choreography are truly an artistic marvel. We are truly blessed to have him and his dancers in Santa Fe.

Choreographer and lead dancer, Juan Siddi, exudes an aura of alpha authority to match his unbelievable footwork, both in ensemble and solo presentations.
Award-winning dancer Julia Chacon offers flamenco dance workshops in Santa Fe. Flamenco is an energetic, visceral music and dance from southern Spain. It does not require a partner, yet it is a great ice breaker for groups and the ultimate in multitasking, incorporating fiery footwork, undulating arms, and staccato timing. It serves as a fun way to stay physically fit and a wonderful team building activity for groups.
Dancing is unique because it has the heart-healthy benefits of aerobics and doubles as a social activity. In fact, the National Lung, Heart and Blood Association said that dancing can lower the risk of coronary disease, lower blood pressure, help manage weight and strengthen bones (www.nhlbi.nih.gov).
Experience the gift of flamenco: both a sport and an art form filled with potential for increased self-esteem, confidence, fitness, fun and communicative skills. No previous art experience or perceived talent is necessary to have a completely successful experience in this workshop.
International dancer, choreographer & teacher, Julia Chacon tours with Carlota Santana Flamenco Vivo out of New York & was principal soloist with Maria Benitez in New Mexico. She has appeared in Spain, Colombia, Mexico, and the USA and her choreography was in included in the 50th Anniversary celebration of the Shanghai Opera House in China. She has been featured on the Travel Channel with Samantha Brown, and appeared in national publications Dance Studio Life Magazine, and Dance Magazine. She helped write a flamenco curriculum for NY public schools, and will teach at the National Dance Education Organization annual conference in October, 2011.
The workshop may include a 10-15 minute flamenco demonstration followed by a class in rhythm and dance. A live guitarist may accompany the class, contributing a lively energy and authentic flamenco experience.
This workshop may be geared to individuals in addition to business, corporations, and academic groups. The flamenco workshop encourages self-exploration and creative leadership skills for individuals, as well as communication, memorable recreational learning, and team-building for groups.
Demo and lesson: $200
This 90 minute session opens with a 10-15 minute flamenco performance followed by a group class. A live guitarist will accompany the demonstration and class. One to 12 students.
Guitarist: $40/hour
Live guitar accompaniment may be added to any lesson. This enhances the session and teaches listening skills and musicality while adding authenticity to the experience.

“Maestro de Bulerias”
Timo Lozano began his professional flamenco career at age 17. He has danced alongside some of the greatest flamenco artists of the era including Matilde Coral, Ciro, Rafael de Cordoba, Angelita Vargas, and others. After touring the world for many years he settled in Madrid and taught at the famed Amor de Dios school of Spanish Dance. He is considered a true master of the bulerias and has taught workshops in 13 countries. His students have gone on to join the companies of Antonio Canales, Joaquin Cortes, and Antonio Gades. An acclaimed cajon player, Lozano was a featured musician in the documentary film, “Flamenco Women,” accompanying Sara Baras and Eva La Yerbabuena.

Fiery footwork, undulating arms, and spiraling hands are the trademarks of FLAMENCO, a passionate dance from Andalusia, the southern part of Spain. Many Spanish settlers to New Mexico were from Andalusia, and their influence is still felt in Santa Fe. New Mexico is home to many world famous flamenco dancers and musicians, and the greatest flamenco artists in the world continue to travel here to teach and perform.
Julia Chacon trained and danced in Spain and performs across the USA and Latin America. Her choreography has been performed in China, Mexico, and throughout the States. She was featured on the Travel Channel teaching celebrity Samantha Brown in 2008 and has also been featured in Local Flavor Magazine and the Collector’s Guide. Private and Semi-Private classes are tailored to your dance level and no previous dance experience is necessary. Ongoing group classes are also offered. In class you will learn flamenco rhythms, zapateado (footwork), brazeo (arm movment), and stylization. Flamenco shoes are best for class, but other sturdy footwear will work (i.e. boots). Men should wear pants and women a long full skirt. Pants are fine for women if a skirt is not available. Wear something that allows you to strike the floor with your feet and gives you FULL range of movement in your arms and legs. Dance class will use your whole body so be sure your clothes allow for that.
