Kathryn Blackmun Pottery, Design & Illustration – September 2010 mini-UPDATE

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Almost fall, time for many of my favorite studio tours, such as Abiquiu, Pilar, El Rito, and of course the upcoming La Cienega Studio Tour on November 27 and 28.

The High Road to Taos tour, one of the biggest, happens September 17 and 18, and 24 and 25 (www.highroadnewmexico.com) and you can see my work at the High Road Marketplace along the way in the mountain village of Truchas, just after the turn north towards Las Trampas.

I’m pleased to say I now have a varied selection of work for sale in the New Mexico Museum of Art’s gift shop in downtown Santa Fe, in addition to being on their New Mexico Creates website. Another new venue I’m excited about is Mariposa Gallery in Albuquerque’s Nob Hill district on Central. It features a lot of edgy and fun paintings, ceramics and jewelry by artists I like, and a few that I own work by, like Lisa Smith, Mike Corney and Jim Ropp

I have a digital collage of my pottery on display at the Santa Fe Community Gallery through September 13, along with the other entries in the City of Santa Fe Poster Contest.

Kathryn Blackmun has a background as a graphic designer and illustrator, has a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Calif. at Irvine and attended Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif. Located 20 minutes southwest of the Santa Fe Plaza, La Cienega is a semi-rural community, home to several artists expand and El Rancho de los Golondrinas.

My studio is in an adobe house on 4 acres with views of the Cerrillos Hills. I specialize in hand painting colorful pottery with under glazes with whimsical cats, birds, pigs, cowgirls and more. There’s a small kiln and slab roller, and I make pottery by shaping slabs of earthenware…on dinnerware.

Lessons can include: Making and painting press-mold plates with under glazes; Painting commercial tiles and bisque with under glazes; Christmas ornaments; or creating a personalized hanging bird feeder.

Workshops can be tailored to your time constraints, they can be for a few days, or for as little as two hours. I’ll be there to assist the entire time, and most supplies and firings are included.

This is a fragrance-free and smoke-free environment.
