The focus of this conceptually driven course is on developing and refining a skilled, intuitive and uniquely individual approach to mark making using sheet glass and powders. Sketches and single layer studies will lead to black and white, as well as color projects. Participants will expand their kilnforming skills while acquiring a greater understanding of material, composition, line, spatial perspective, and layering strategies. Experimentation and invention will be encouraged to move from idea to final resolution.

While there is a tradition of painting on glass that spans many centuries, it is only fairly recently that materials and processes have been developed, largely at Bullseye Glass, that allow artists to paint with glass. Students in this class will work with colored glass materials ranging from sheet to crushed glass powders and frits, and threads of glass called stringers to build a palette of techniques that allows a wide range of painterly effects. After working through a series of very specific hands-on exercises, students will undertake several exploratory projects to further develop their understanding of the materials. This workshop is suitable for artists from other media who want to translate their work into glass and is also valuable to beginning through advanced kilnworkers.

This workshop will explore the basics of many of the practices that are known as kiln-glass. Through discussions, demonstrations, slideshows and hands-on work time, you will learn about cutting sheet glass, fusing, slumping, kilncasting, firing cycles, the effects made possible by firing glass to various temperatures, coldworking and how to achieve painterly imagery with glass. After taking this class you will be ready to choose a direction in which to further your kiln-glass education. That direction could lead you back to your studio to hone your skills or to one of our more focused workshops. No prerequisites.

This 2-day watercolor workshop will focus on painting beautiful Southwest Landscapes with bright blue skies and fluffy clouds. Students will learn techniques for adding mountains and pueblos/adobe buildings to compliment the sky. This workshop is for beginning and intermediate students.

Student’s work – basic bead stringing
In co-operation with Artisan, Barry is teaching a five day ‘plein air’ workshop October 11 thru 15. The class will again be painting at some of Barry’s favorite sites around Santa Fe, including El Rancho de las Golondrinas, Santuario de Chimayo and Ghost Ranch. The group will meet the first day at Artisan located at 2601 Cerrillos Road at 9am.
A Message From Barry McCuan
Every landscape has its own special timbre, harmonies of colors and textures. Each area has its own distinct dialect, nuances and contrasts. My paintings are my response to these forces; and, as in the leaves of a journal, they are a record of the places I have grown to love and of my travels to new lands. My earliest memories are of a camping trip to Pecos in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, not far from Santa Fe. For a very young boy, growing up on the flat, hot, arid plains of the Llano Estacado, the mountains were like a luscious paradise. The trees, the running water and the light, embedded themselves in my memory and it became my mission to return one day to live and paint. This memory and the influence of the Taos Founders, introduced to me by my father are part of the reason why I started to paint.
For years I have painted primarily in New Mexico. The organic sculptural forms of adobes, the mountains and undulating lower ground; pinons, arroyos, fruit trees in the springtime and aspens in the fall are all a visual feast to me, but it is the clarity of light which makes all these elements so extraordinary. Since marrying another painter, Lynne E. Windsor, I have added Florida and Europe to my painting repertoire, especially France and Italy, but also England and Scotland. The ancient stone buildings, the mountains and valleys, fields of sunflowers and lavender have at once been familiar, but refreshingly different.
The land has an emotional and physical effect on me. This is why I am primarily a plein air painter. My desire is to convey in my paintings the essence of a place. Sublimating the aromas of the lavender in Southern France, the ocean smells of Florida ; the fragrant marjoram as I stand on the roadside in Italy and paint a field of sunflowers or the luminescence of a late New Mexico afternoon – when the light makes that leap to another level of saturation, are all important factors. Being totally immersed in the nuances of the land is what inspires me to paint and is essential for the renewal of my spirit.
