These are small, in-the-field photography workshops designed for all levels of photographers. These workshops include study on the history, nature, and culture of our subjects - the architecture, landscapes and wildlife of New Mexico. I believe that knowledge of one's subjects improves our capacity to capture it in an expressive form. I strive to help you take your photography

skills to new levels, which will include in-depth discussions on composition, personal vision, and intentional photography. Great art doesn't just happen. Preparedness, thoughtfulness, and an appreciation of the natural world all come together to enhance one's capacity as an artistic photographer. Other topics to be discussed include exposure, depth of field, techniques for photographing wildlife, and important elements of a black and white image. Time is also devoted to developing the necessary skills to process and create your images in the digital darkroom, and in some workshop you will be able to print archival images of your photographs.
Each workshop has a unique combination of subjects, which may include wild horses, the lesser known missions of Northern New Mexico, Bosque del Apache, Tent Rocks, Chaco Canyon, Ghost Ranch, or the splendors of autumn in the Jemez River Valley and Northern New Mexico. While a focus on your photography will be foremost, it is also important to me that your experience is enjoyable. You can expect to have a few laughs.

to explore ranch life as lived on the colonial frontier.
Upon its moving waters and quiet ponds are set the mills. Up the hill stands the chapel. The bleat of the goats and sheep, the bray of the burro beckon the farmer. Prominent in the silhouette of the Placita is the defensive tower or torreón. Within the courtyards, ovens, or hornos, bring forth the memorable aroma of homemade bread. The clack of the looms dominates just as it once did hundreds of years ago in many New Mexican villages.
All of these aspects of life on the frontier are explored through the many activities set among the significant structures of this living history museum dedicated to recapturing a past life of beauty and hard work.

Camp is held at the historic home of Olive Rush, currently the Friends Meeting House. The space is a beautiful adobe home with a rambling back yard situated about half way up Canyon Road.
In this beautiful small group setting we will build our 4x5 super wide pinhole cameras and get a hands on approach to the geometry of photography.
We will expose and develop images with photographic film and paper. Negatives will be digitally scanned for quick viewing while our printing will be done in the alternative process of Cyanotype and Van Dyke.
Enjoy a harvest of wonderful pinhole imagery and green chili and explore the history, art and techniques of this beautiful and intuitive process in its simplest and most rewarding form.
This time of year is the most beautiful in our beloved Santa Fe and we hope that you join camp obscura for adventures in pinhole photography and celebrate the light that surrounds us all during Fiesta Week 2009.

Healing the Earth - Healing Ourselves
Throughout the history of the world people have found meaning in belonging to the larger Earth body. We must come back home to the Earth by joining with others and the Earth in a community of healing. People of the Earth…Unite!

homes, ovens and benches and sculptures. Working together as a community we will construct individual and group healing objects. The earth heals in ways we will never understand.
We can construct an “Earthprayer for World Peace,” a collaborative earthen structure in which we embed prayers, poems and objects. This gesture is an act of peace providing hope and testimony to the power of community healing. Imagine! The Earth building process helps us feel connected to nature once again by using mindfulness, visualizations, humor, ritual, storytelling and drumming.
“It is beautiful all around me” is an essential teaching from the Navaho nation that reminds us that beauty; love, harmony and belonging are essential to life. It is also great fun!!!

a means to share our passion for the art of photography by providing exceptional photographic experiences. In a nutshell, we offer incredible, comprehensive workshops that enhance your skills and open new doors to your creativity.
We have extensive knowledge of photography and its associated processes and will teach you techniques in the field and in the classroom that will enrich your experience, taking you "to the right place at the right time" for the best possible images. ? What’s equally important is that we love teaching and enjoy sharing our enthusiasm for the photographic image and process.
Small Group Sizes + Individual Attention + Supportive Learning Environment = Fun!!!
We limit our group sizes to no more than 10 participants, which means you will be in a small group of like minded photographers, getting the best out of a location and the most help from us. We believe that everyone is creative and capable of capturing fantastic images. Our workshops accommodate the needs of both beginning photographers and shooters with more experience with our individual attention extending to those who feel less confident in their abilities as well as photographers who are more experienced.
We also facilitate learning and fun in a highly collaborative working environment because we believe having a wonderful time is central to the creative process and, while we take photography very seriously, we also laugh…a lot! In our experience, much more is learned from collaboration and conversation among the group than any other learning model. As such, we’ll all collaborate on individual skills improvement in an informal and friendly atmosphere. You are encouraged to identify and communicate your learning goals and to bring your own images with you for you and other participants to discuss and learn from.
In essence, our focus is on providing the opportunities to photograph unique and exciting subjects, and to improve your skills and expand your creativity, enabling you to take and make incredible images and that will further your photographic interests for a lifetime!
