photography skills to new levels, which will include in-depth discussions on composition, personal vision, and intentional photography. Great art doesn't just happen. Preparedness, thoughtfulness, and an appreciation of the natural world all come together to enhance one's capacity as an artistic photographer. Other topics to be discussed include exposure, depth of field, techniques for photographing wildlife, and important elements of a black and white image. Time is also devoted to developing the necessary skills to process and create your images in the digital darkroom, and in some workshop you will be able to print archival images of your photographs.
Each workshop has a unique combination of subjects, which may include wild horses, the lesser known missions of Northern New Mexico, Bosque del Apache, Tent Rocks, Chaco Canyon, Ghost Ranch, or the splendors of autumn in the Jemez River Valley and Northern New Mexico. While a focus on your photography will be foremost, it is also important to me that your experience is enjoyable. You can expect to have a few laughs.

Both campuses provide opportunities for those who value learning and see education as a means for individual and social transformation. We believe that true education engages both head and heart. Our programs combine discussion and hands-on experiences to help participants expand their sense of self and world.
We introduce issues of local and regional significance into our programs in hopes of exposing participants to new cultural, historical and religious ideas. The community of Santa Fe and northern New Mexico help provide resources and atmosphere that makes learning through Ghost Ranch, at either campus, a truly unique experience. Our faculty comes from many disciplines and from many parts of the United States and the world to offer education intentionally grounded in the context of northern New Mexico.

our passion for the art of photography by providing exceptional photographic experiences. In a nutshell, we offer incredible, comprehensive workshops that enhance your skills and open new doors to your creativity.
We have extensive knowledge of photography and its associated processes and will teach you techniques in the field and in the classroom that will enrich your experience, taking you "to the right place at the right time" for the best possible images. ? What’s equally important is that we love teaching and enjoy sharing our enthusiasm for the photographic image and process.
Small Group Sizes + Individual Attention + Supportive Learning Environment = Fun!!!
We limit our group sizes to no more than 10 participants, which means you will be in a small group of like minded photographers, getting the best out of a location and the most help from us. We believe that everyone is creative and capable of capturing fantastic images. Our workshops accommodate the needs of both beginning photographers and shooters with more experience with our individual attention extending to those who feel less confident in their abilities as well as photographers who are more experienced.
We also facilitate learning and fun in a highly collaborative working environment because we believe having a wonderful time is central to the creative process and, while we take photography very seriously, we also laugh…a lot! In our experience, much more is learned from collaboration and conversation among the group than any other learning model. As such, we’ll all collaborate on individual skills improvement in an informal and friendly atmosphere. You are encouraged to identify and communicate your learning goals and to bring your own images with you for you and other participants to discuss and learn from.
In essence, our focus is on providing the opportunities to photograph unique and exciting subjects, and to improve your skills and expand your creativity, enabling you to take and make incredible images and that will further your photographic interests for a lifetime!

The Personal Shrine by sculptor and photographer, Walter W. Nelson / writer Douglas J. Preston at the base of Pedernal Peak, beloved mountain to Georgia O'Keeffe.

in the landscape to honor a loved one we have lost.
“Using only natural materials – rocks, grasses, branches, flowers, leaves, colored sands, and perhaps ashes, we will each create our own personal shrine in the natural landscape in a place so remote it will not be known to anyone but you and the other participants in this workshop. The shrine will be created from nature, to return to nature; only your photographs, writings, and drawings will travel away with you.
